poem: The Standard of Happiness

What is the standard of happiness?
Is there a standard of happiness?
Most people are eager for happiness.

Money, respect, sussess, health, family, and friend.
Are they standards of happiness?
Does standard of happiness really exist in our life?

Are people really working hard for their goal?

People are working for their own happiness,
and they are losing the valuable things in our life.
The world is getting colder and filling with the apathy.

We are just passing the real happiness and precious thing.

We are making the standards today ourselves.

The Crucible

The Crucible is based on the witch trials that took place in 1692, in Salem, Massachusetts. The crucible deals with many political and social issues. For example conflict between community and a person, religion, discrimination, and socialism. The main point of this political issue is McCarthyism.

As Arthur Miller wrote the Crucible, McCarthyism was the hot political issue in the United States. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s America was overwhelmed with concerns about the threat of communism growing in Eastern Europe and China. Capitalizing on those concerns, a young Senator named Joseph McCarthy made a public accusation that more than two hundred “card-carrying” communists had infiltrated the United States government. Though eventually his accusations were proven to be untrue, and he was censured by the Senate for unbecoming conduct, his zealous campaigning ushered in one of the most repressive times in 20th-century American politics. As a results thousands of Americans were accused of being communists or communist sympathizers

Arthur Miller could draw parallels with the events of McCarthyism in 1950s America and the accusations of witchcraft in Salem. Salem was a great opportunity for Miller to explain to the world how the McCarthy Era undermined the American community. People of Salem made a false confession to avoid hanging. Salem witch trials made people be accused being witches as McCarthyism made people be accused being communists .Miller was not concerned with the reality of actual witches but with the unwillingness of the court officials to admit and believe that they were wrong and that there aren't witches in Salem.

Besides, Arthur Miller dealt with conflict with community and a person. At that time era, the Christian religion was only a religion to all people. However, John Proctor had no religion and didn’t believe god. It also deals conflict of religion. In addition, as Hale and Parris suppressed to Tituba and Sarah Good, they fellow and accepted everything that they’ve never done. Hale and Parris seemed form community. Then Tituba and Sarah formed like a person. But, when Hale and Parris suppressed John Proctor as they’ve done to Tituba and Sarah, John didn’t follow them. Then he said “You will not use me! I am no Sarah Good or Tituba, I am John Proctor! You will not use me! It is no part of salvation that you should use me!” Act 1 page 1272 line 9. Finally, the result that John didn’t allow them was death. He had to choose death to not allow them. Accordingly this novel shows how inhumane if a person didn’t allow a community.

In addition, the Crucible is dealing with discrimination. At that time period, many African Black slaves were in the United States. In this story, Tituba was only an African black in the Salem. So, when Hale was suspicious Abigail, she made up a fictitious lie about Tituba. Then hale believe that lie easily without any doubts. That means there was discrimination about African black, and people took black people for an easy mark. Arthur Miller reflected awareness of people who lived at that time period about black people.

In conclusions, Arthur Miller wrote the story reflecting the political and social issues of the time. Especially Miller completely dealt with McCarthyism through witch trials in Salem. So ‘The Crucible' successfully draws a parallel with the events of McCarthyism in 1950s America.

Final Exam civil disobedient

Civil Disobedience

civil disobedience is often occurring in our life. What makes people start to these disobedience in our life. According to "On Civil Disobedience: An Interview with Howard Zinn" by Chian Aksan and Jon Bailes, Howard Zinn said that our problem is civil obedience, not civil disobedience, since when people don't recognize it as injustice, or when they have been taught to respect and trust- the president, their minister, even their family. At Those time, people just accept those injustice, however, they still don't know whether it's right, or not. i think the most reason that they still don't recognize is that they dont't care about  any problems. some people don't want to participate to vary something wrong because sometimes that makes them get into the problems. SO it's the important to attempt to change some injustice. Besides, Zinn has said "If you study the actual workings of the justice system over the course of our history, it becomes clear that if favors the rich over the poor, the white over the black, the orthodox over the radical." We have been so many injustice in our history. Therefore, we should study of these problems and attempt to change.

In our history, there was famous people: Henry David, Thoreau, Mohandas Gandhi, and Martin Luther King Jr. Theyare famous people as human right activitists. Thoreau was refused to pay the tax because he was opposed to the U.S. war with Mexico, which he believed was an excuse to expand America's slaveholding territory. So, he was arrested because he was still refused on principle to pay a tax to the state. At that time, that happen was the inspiration for the essay "Resistance to Civil Government".This essay shows that Thoreau merely wanted to withdraw from life. In his essay "Resistance to civil Government", he said "Is a democracy, such as we know it, the last improvement possible in the government? Is it not possible to take a step further toward recognizing and organizing the right of man? Ther will be nver be a really free and enlightned State, until the State comes to tecognize the individual as a higher and independent power.......". If the government is not going to accept people's statements.

Showing their unfair and starting civil disobedience one not shame because it would be the best way to change something wrong. Also, the govenrment and the other organizations can improve their problems through protesting. I agree Zinn's statement, which is "Our problem is Civil ovedience, not civil disobedience." Because if we knew something are very wrong and just obey those laws, our society would not have any freedom and any free to speak their opinions. In addition, we have to study and know about something wrong and attempt to change. So, Civil Disobedience sometimes can be best way to our society, and it's not wrong situation.

Framed Found Poem

Who Understands Civil Obedience?

Who understands civil obedience?
The government makes break us off from the human rights,
so we lived without human rights.
We start to know discrimination by the government and white people.
We wanted to break some laws.
This is our certainly a legitimate concern.
Though the government dose not want to understand us.

Who understands civil obedience?
We start to express our thoughts, emotions, and what we want.
We try to support to nonviolence.
We want to obtain rights for our posterity.
Though the government thinks it is certainly impetuous happen,
and they are finding a expectation to make stop our protest.

Who understands civil obedience?
We lose rights as citizens.
We are also American and born in here.
We have a right for living as a American.
Though the government and some people don't accept that we are American.

Why are we fighting for this simple problem?

"Story of An Hour" by Kate Chopin

The American author, Kate Chopin grew up in the time of the battle for women’s rights. She was raised in a culture where many people were holding on to society and value the way they were, and yet many others were feeling there was need for change. Kate wrote stories about women in the future. In the Story of an hour it expresses through the main character, Louise Mallard. In the end of this story, the equilibrium of Louise Mallard’s situation is what survives: Brently mallard’s return signals the return of her oppressive condition and ensures that Louise will experience no more than a momentary change her situation.

When Louise Mallard goes to her room, she cries to see a window “free!, Body and soul free!”. It means she was gotten a lot of oppression from Brently so she thinks she can enjoy her freedom to the fullest without her husband. Her sister, Josephin and Brently’s friend, Richard think she may be anxious and gloomy of his death, however, she is not grieve, she is pleased  of that telegram.

Louise’s status as “wife” is reestablished at once in the story’s language and in Louise’s life when Brently comes in “view of his wife”. Before Louise heard a telegram that Brently is dead by accident, everything was focused on her husband and lived around his life. But, when she hears news from her sister, she thinks she can way out of her husband’s oppression, however, Brently comes back to home while Louise enjoys her short-freedom. Then all of oppression also comes back with him. Also, Louise’s status as “wife” is also came back to her.

Brently Mallard had never looked save with love upon her. He disregarded Louise’s happiness. Brently had all hegemony. Even though, Louise loves him. When she goes to her room, even he was kind of aggressive to Louise, she had loved him – sometimes. It means at that time there was patriarchal system in order to most of men were above women. Louise was still oppressed from Brently because he might have patriarchal in his mind. It would have disturbed relationship between Louise and Brently.

Louise was still looked upon as needing the protection and support of her husband. She has never enjoyed her freedom and received her husband’s love. In this story Louise is eager for free because she has lots of oppression from Brently.

Many of Kate Chopin’s female characters seek freedom from the conventional restraints of society, including marriage. Louise is also one of female character of shows women image which is get oppression from men.

Autobiography

I am born in Korea and from South Korea. Korea is an East Asian territory that is divided into North Korea and South Korea. We have our language and alphabets. We are called our alphabet to Hangul. It created by King Sejong the Great in the 14th century. So, most of Koreans are using this alphabet and speaking in Korean. The capital of Korea is Seoul. A lot of people are living around that city because many traffics and buildings are concentrated. Also, in the central of Seoul we can see old palaces which is king and queen were lived a long time ago and streets. Some streets are unique because those streets have old buildings and use Hangul signs, not use any other language. So many tourists visit this city.

I was lived in Korea until 10th grade. When I was 9th grade I was interested in fine art and went to art school. My parents supported me and offered everything that I need. However, when I entered high school in Korea (Korea high school course is three years.) my mother and aunt wanted to make my brother and me learn more English. But, my mother didn’t finish her job and my father quit the job for us and we went to immigration. My mother came later than us.

I am immigrant now. When I came in the U.S., everything was not familiar to me because everything was different from Korea, people, language, life style, and every street. Especially language was really difficult to me .So, when I had homework I spent lots of time and when I talk with fiends I needed a great courage. But, nowadays I am having fun time with my new friends. Even though I don’t adapt a lot and I’m still learning English, I’m trying to study SAT and draw picture to go to good university and get a good job.
